Decide which wall faces need a finished surround before ordering a casing package.

A doorway can look complete from the living room while the kitchen side still needs finishing. A quotation that simply says casing does not tell either trade which faces, returns or junctions are included. Cavorlen's documented 40×18 and 40×65 interior-door references offer single- or double-side casing after wall-thickness confirmation. The useful choice is not automatically the larger package: it is the package that fits the finished opening and the agreed division of work.

Identify the two faces on a drawing

Label the room faces A and B and show what each will look like when complete. Ask the supplier to mark the extent of its single-side and double-side package on that drawing. Do not assume that every manufacturer uses the terms for identical parts or that a trim on one face includes the full wall return.

Single-side casing may be worth considering where the opposite face is deliberately finished by another trade. A double-side package may suit an opening where both visible faces need a coordinated surround. Neither choice proves that the raw opening is suitable or that all making-good is included. Confirm the actual section and included components before comparing prices.

Measure the intended finished wall, not just the raw blockwork

Provide the current opening dimensions and identify the finish build-up on each face: plaster, tile, panels or another specified material. If the finishes are not installed, state that the supplied thickness is a proposed finished dimension and who will verify it. Do not silently use a raw wall measurement as the order dimension.

Take the project team's agreed measurements at the relevant positions rather than assuming one reading represents an uneven opening. If the finish changes, send the revised section before casing fabrication. The supplier should confirm the offered fit and any adjustment range; this guide does not prescribe a universal allowance or tell installers to force the surround into place.

Compare the kitchen and living-room junctions

In a hypothetical partition, face A meets painted plaster and a skirting board; face B meets kitchen tiles and cabinetry. Mark the tile edge, skirting termination, nearby switches and cabinet clearance. Ask who supplies each return and who makes good the adjacent finishes. This turns a vague casing option into a visible scope comparison.

Keep access to the door's serviceable components in the discussion. Ask how the selected system is inspected or serviced after trim and finishes are installed. Do not assume decorative casing can carry a top-hung door or replace the separately designed support. Product support, finish cover and maintenance access are different decisions.

Send a complete casing enquiry

Attach an elevation, a wall section, photographs of both faces and the proposed finish schedule. Request the selected casing extent, finish, included pieces, site-cutting or installation scope where applicable, and exclusions. Keep delivery quantities tied to doorway marks so a single-side package is not fitted to a double-side requirement.

Review the 40×18 product and the 40×65 product for the documented option routes. Request a casing quotation with both finished wall faces identified.

FAQ

Is double-side casing always better?

No. Select the extent needed for both finished faces and the scope assigned to other trades.

Is casing included in the base door price?

Do not assume so. The supplied references list it as an option requiring confirmation.

Can raw wall thickness be used?

Identify the finished build-up and verification status; obtain confirmation for the actual ordered section.

Does casing support a top-hung door?

Do not use decorative casing as evidence of adequate structural support. The support arrangement needs its own review.
