A thermal break matters, but it is not a magic stripe that turns every aluminum window into a high-performance window.

Picture two window sections on a sample table. Both have a dark separator between inside and outside aluminum. One performs well as a complete window. The other loses heat around the glazing edge and air through poorly controlled joints. Both can be called “thermal break”. That label starts the review; it does not finish it.

Follow the heat path

Aluminum conducts heat readily. The separator interrupts the direct metal path, but heat still moves through frame geometry, glazing, spacer, gaskets and junctions.

Ask to see the section drawing. Separator width and material matter, but so do cavities, corner connections, sash-to-frame relationships and glass position.

Know which number you are reading

A glass value is not a whole-window value. A frame value is not one either. ISO 10077 separates calculation of the completed window from numerical treatment of frames and glazing junctions.

When a brochure shows one impressive number, ask: what does it measure, which method and unit were used, and what exact specimen produced it?

  • Ug: glazing value
  • Uf: frame value
  • Uw: whole-window value
  • SHGC: admitted solar heat
  • VT: visible light transmission

Hot climates need two conversations

Reducing conductive heat flow and controlling solar gain are related but different. A hot, high-sun project may need both a low whole-window U-value and appropriately controlled SHGC.

Low-e coating, tint, orientation and shading influence solar performance. Selecting glass by colour alone is not a specification.

Opening type changes the result

Fixed, casement and sliding windows do not seal the same way. Sliding systems use different joint and drainage logic from compression-sealed casements.

Do not transfer a claim from one opening type to another without evidence. Size matters too: one tested specimen is not automatic proof for every larger unit.

Request five useful documents

A serious review does not need a mountain of PDFs. It needs the right documents and a clear connection between them.

  • Proposed section drawing
  • Glass build-up and spacer
  • Hardware and seal schedule
  • Applicable calculation or test report
  • Differences between tested and proposed units

Questions buyers ask

Does a wider thermal break always perform better?

Not by itself. Material, geometry, assembly, glazing and the complete tested configuration influence performance.

Is double glazing enough?

Pane count alone is insufficient. Coatings, cavities, gas, spacer and climate must be considered.

Does thermal performance cover air and water resistance?

No. Thermal, air leakage, water penetration and structural resistance are separate requirements.
