The useful question is not “Is this a big factory?” It is “Can this team turn our drawings into a controlled package—and show us where the risks are?”

Two suppliers can quote the same schedule and return totals that look surprisingly close. One has priced the requested glass, hardware, finish and packing. The other has quietly changed three assumptions. On a spreadsheet they look comparable. On site, they are not.

Begin with one awkward drawing

A catalogue tells you what a factory wants to sell. A drawing tells you how the factory thinks. Send one representative elevation, one schedule page and a difficult detail. Then study the questions that come back.

A useful response flags inconsistent marks, missing opening directions, unsupported sizes and unclear interfaces. A price returned in ten minutes may feel efficient; when the input is incomplete, silence is often the expensive part.

  • Which revision governs?
  • Where do quantities disagree?
  • What has been assumed?
  • Which sizes need engineering review?
  • What is outside the supplier’s scope?

Give the sample a birth certificate

A sample without a configuration record is just a nice object in a meeting room. Record the profile, glass build-up, spacer, hardware, gaskets, drainage, finish and dimensions.

Photograph labels and agreed details. If production later changes, the team needs a reference more precise than “make it like the sample”.

Walk the process backwards

Start at final release: what evidence allows a unit to be packed? Trace that answer backwards through glazing, assembly, machining and incoming materials.

This reveals whether quality is a chain of recorded decisions or a final visual check. It also shows what happens to a non-conforming unit when the delivery date is close.

Test the handover, not just the hardware

Project trouble often begins between departments. Ask who owns drawings, approves substitutions, freezes the finish and can make a commercial commitment.

If every answer depends on one salesperson remembering a chat message, the process is fragile. A capable team can show a route from enquiry to approved drawings, production release, inspection and dispatch.

Compare exclusions before prices

Put quotations into one scope matrix. Compare glass, hardware, screens, subframes, trims, sealants, packing, spares, testing and installation support line by line.

The lowest number sometimes becomes the highest project cost after missing items return as variations. A transparent quotation is valuable because it shows what has not yet been decided.

Questions buyers ask

Is factory size a reliable shortcut?

No. Capacity matters, but drawing control, tested configurations, inspection records and delivery coordination determine whether it is useful.

Should we accept a generic test report?

Only after checking the configuration, dimensions, opening type, method, issuing body and differences from the proposed unit.

When is a factory visit most useful?

After the supplier has reviewed a real project sample, so the visit can audit the controls that matter.
